Mathew is a partner in our projects and real estate team with experience advising on some of New Zealand’s most significant development and construction projects, from inception through delivery, across a range of industry sectors.

Mathew's experience includes structuring, negotiating and drafting complex development agreements and construction contracts. He also has experience advising on agreements for sale and purchase and significant commercial leases.

He has built strong relationships with and advises a number of the firm's key clients including Precinct Properties, Tainui, ANZ, Port Marlborough, Crown Infrastructure Partners, Wellington City Council, Tauranga City Council and Taupo District Council.

Mathew consistently receives excellent feedback from clients and is involved in helping them bring construction and development projects to life with his extensive practical knowledge of how things work in the 'real world' as well as his technical legal capability.

Mathew was named a rising star in NZ Lawyer's 2024 list.

Precinct Properties
Advised Precinct Properties on all aspects of its acquisition, leasing and construction for its development at 61 Molesworth Street, Wellington.

Advised Precinct Properties on the construction contracts for the delivery of the Government's Wellington Accommodation Project Tranche 2 (WAP2), including the construction contracts for seismic strengthening and redevelopment of the Charles Fergusson Building, New Zealand Defence House, Mayfair House, 1 The Terrace, and Pastoral House.

Advised Precinct Properties on the construction contract and development agreement for its seismic strengthening and redevelopment of Bowen House.

Advised Precinct Properties on all aspects of the development, leasing and construction of its Bowen Campus Stage 2 Development comprising two new buildings at 40-44 Bowen Street, Wellington.

Advised Precinct Properties on the construction contract for the redevelopment of the lower and basement levels of 1 Willis Street, Wellington.

Advised Precinct Properties on the construction contracts for the seismic strengthening and redevelopment of the historic Dunbar Sloane Building.

Tainui
Advised Tainui on its purchase of a half share in Centre Place North, a large retail shopping centre in central Hamilton, as part of a complex joint venture arrangement with Kiwi Property.

Advised Tainui on its commercial office development in Hamilton for ACC including on the development, leasing and construction agreements.

Advised Tainui on its development and leasing of the Ruakura inland port and logistics hub.

Te Pūkenga
Advised Te Pūkenga on various construction contracts across its programme of high priority building upgrade works across New Zealand.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
Advised the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on the construction services agreement and form of design and construct contract for its Pacific Property Systems Project to deliver civil and vertical construction upgrades across the Pacific region.

Crown Infrastructure Partners
Advised Crown Infrastructure Partners on the implementation of the Milldale infrastructure funding model.

Port Marlborough
Advised Port Marlborough on the construction contracts for the redevelopment and expansion of its Waikawa marina facility, including for complex reclamation and underwater works.

Advised Port Marlborough on strategic property projects, including the major redevelopment and leasing of its port facilities.

Wellington City Council
Advised Wellington City Council on its plans to revitalise the Civic Square Precinct and strengthen the Town Hall.

Tauranga City Council
Advised Tauranga City Council on its master construction services agreement and construction contract for its Te Manawataki o Te Papa development of a new civic whare, exhibition gallery and museum, library and community hub in Tauranga.

Advised Tauranga City Council on strategic property projects including in respect of the development programme for the Tauranga CBD.

Taupo District Council
Advised Taupo District Council on its development and leasing arrangements with Ngāti Tūwharetoa for a new municipal office building in Taupo.

Advised Taupo District Council on the construction contracts for the redevelopment of Taupo Airport.

Advised The Embassy of the Peoples' Republic of China in New Zealand on the acquisition and enabling works for the development of its proposed new Chinese Embassy.

Advised Genesis Energy on the construction contract for the installation of a new intake gate at the Tekapo A hydroelectric power scheme.

Horizons Regional Council
Advised Horizons Regional Council on its construction contract for the new development of Palmerston North accommodation for the Inland Revenue Department.
