Finnbahr is a dual qualified solicitor (admitted in Ireland and New Zealand), and holds an LLB from the University of Otago. After graduating and working at another large law firm in New Zealand, he gained international experience working in the Dublin and London offices of Matheson LLP, where he was appointed partner at the beginning of 2023.  

While in London Finnbahr also worked at Dentons UK’s general banking department, where he worked primarily on leveraged finance and real estate finance transactions, as well as debt restructurings. During his time at Dentons UK, he also spent six months seconded as a lawyer to the Lloyds Bank debt finance practice.

Prior to joining Bell Gully in 2024:

Leveraged finance and general corporate lending

Advised a private equity-backed sponsor client in relation to the EUR 1.7 billion acquisition of an Irish and Indian pharmaceuticals business.

Advised the mandated lead arrangers in relation to the €250 million sustainability-linked financing of an Irish head quartered dairy cooperative with operations in Ireland, the UK, the US, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands.

Advised a private equity-backed sponsor in relation to the financing elements of its acquisition of an Irish headquartered, multi-national food production company. This deal received the Finance Dublin deal of the year.

Advised on the EUR 310 million equity-linked bond issuance arrangements in relation to the acquisition of Ireland’s largest dairy processor and the largest buyer and user of Irish grains.

Advised a NASDAQ-listed Irish public company in relation to its financing arrangements with a US private credit fund, entered into for the purpose of financing its M&A activity.

Real estate finance

Advised a US private equity firm in relation to its investment and development of student housing accommodation.

Advised an Irish lender on financing the acquisition of a number of hotels in Ireland and Spain.

Advised the lenders in connection with the acquisition of a Hostel in central Dublin.

Restructurings

Advised a leading investment bank on the restructuring of €750 million debt arrangements relating to a large retail shopping centre.

Advised “cross over” lenders in relation to the debtor-in-possession financing arrangements implemented on the back of Chapter 11 insolvency proceedings and Irish examinership proceedings against an Irish public company.

Advised a multi-national group of companies in the renewable energy industry in relation to financing arrangements following the implementation of Chapter 11 insolvency proceedings and Irish examinership proceedings.

Fund finance

Advised a private credit fund on its NAV facility arrangements.

Advised an asset manager on its US$5 billion subscription line facilities.

Advised an asset manager on its €150 million subscription line facilities.
