Knowledge and inspiration to "step up" in challenging times

A strong line-up of speakers shared knowledge and inspiration at this year's annual Corporate Lawyers Association of New Zealand (CLANZ) conference in Christchurch last week.

Around the conference theme of "Stepping Up: Your Pathway to Success" speakers focused on delivering to delegates valuable information to assist them to "step up" personally and professionally in challenging times.

Keynote speaker John Anderson, founder of the global Contiki brand, began the conference on an inspiring note when he shared his story of leaving New Zealand at 22 on his OE and beginning his tour operator business with one mini van and just 25 pounds as a means to pay for his own travels around Europe. He returned to New Zealand 20 years later with a wife, four children and an international business that had gone from turnover of $6000 in the first year to $400 million.

The programme also featured a range of leading in-house counsel sharing their perspectives and experiences with the more than 200 in-house delegates attending the conference.

Bell Gully, a long-time supporter of CLANZ, also contributed to the programme.

Partners Rob Towner and Simon Ladd provided a practical guide for key issues and actions to consider when organisations are faced with investigations on employment matters or by regulatory authorities and partner Jenny Cooper and senior associate Brendan Cash provided insights into options and techniques for successfully resolving disputes.

Jenny Cooper also chaired a panel reviewing development and practical steps to retain privilege and independence as in-house counsel.

Bell Gully competition specialists, partners Phil Taylor and Torrin Crowther, joined Commerce Commission General Counsel Peter Taylor in a panel session entitled Meet the Regulator, looking at the Commission's role and considerations for in-house lawyers when dealing with it.
