Regulating our capital markets in a changing world

Key issues surrounding New Zealand capital markets regulation in a changing international environment will be on the agenda at a high level conference in Auckland next month.

Regulation of New Zealand Capital Markets is a one-day conference to be held on Friday 1 May by the Legal Research Foundation, in partnership with the Ministry of Economic Development and the Government-appointed Capital Market Development Taskforce. The objectives of the taskforce are to:

  • identify key constraints and key opportunities for the development of New Zealand's financial system;
  • identify and debate options to improve the performance of capital markets in New Zealand; and
  • develop a blueprint for the development of New Zealand's capital markets.

The conference is designed to assist the taskforce engage with key stakeholders on the principles of capital markets regulation, lessons that can be learned from the global financial crisis, and the appropriate regulatory framework for developing capital markets in New Zealand.

Bell Gully litigation partner Jenny Cooper has led the committee organising the conference, together with Bell Gully Chair and Director of the Legal Research Foundation, Roger Partridge.

The conference will be chaired by Rob Cameron, chair of the Capital Market Development Taskforce, and will include presentations from Securities Commission chair Jane Diplock, Dr Ruben Lee, Managing Director of the Oxford Finance Group and a leading commentator on capital markets and the global credit crunch, Pamela Hanrahan, Associate Professor from Melbourne University and a senior executive leader for the Australian Securities and Investment Commission, Adrian Orr, Chief Executive of the New Zealand Superannuation Fund and a member of the CMD Taskforce, Cathy Quinn, a member of the CMD Taskforce and the Securities Commission, and Warwick Hunt, CEO of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The conference will also feature a number of expert commentators, including Bell Gully corporate partner and member of NZX Discipline, David Flacks.
