The rapid growth in New Zealand's funds management and investment sector has prompted Bell Gully to expand its specialist practice.
Mark Todd has been joined by corporate partner Haydn Wong in advising clients in the fast-developing market boosted by the arrival of KiwiSaver and the PIE (Portfolio Investment Entities) regime.
As one of New Zealand's pre-eminent investment product lawyers, working in the area for almost 20 years, Mark has first-hand knowledge of the significant changes New Zealand has seen. Having advised on superannuation at a large London law firm early in his career, he returned to New Zealand to help develop a specialist practice at Bell Gully.
At that time, employer superannuation schemes were the dominant part of the practice but in the last decade their presence has declined as a consequence of the firm's greater involvement in the retail funds management sector as that has developed. With the focus on retirement savings and New Zealand's savings' record generally, there are clear signs of further market and product evolution lead by the introduction of KiwiSaver schemes and PIEs.
All the indicators, say Mark, "show very clearly that funds management and savings products are going to be a big part of our financial economy into the future. The sector has been turned on its head in the last few years and the level of innovation among product providers, as well as the growing numbers joining KiwiSaver, point to even greater growth and development".
Mark, Haydn and their team advise a wide range of clients, including funds management companies, trustee companies and employers, on KiwiSaver and many other investment product offerings.
Haydn has welcomed the opportunity to add to his existing M&A, corporate and securities work. "While personally it's great to be involved in such a high growth and interesting field, as a firm it represents a commitment to this area of practice and to ensuring that clients and companies that operate within it are well serviced by us," says Haydn.
