Searching for New Zealand's leading young in-house lawyer

Nominations are now open for the annual awards recognising New Zealand’s most talented corporate lawyers.

The Corporate Lawyers Association of New Zealand (CLANZ) and Bell Gully present the Young Corporate Lawyer Award to an in-house lawyer who has made an outstanding contribution in his or her role and who has demonstrated potential as a leading member of the in-house legal profession in New Zealand.

The winner receives a NZ$5,000 scholarship package to help with career development, such as attending an overseas conference.

Past winners have included a line-up of talented lawyers working and leading teams in some of the country’s major corporate organisations including:

2007: Rebecca Davidson, Senior Legal Counsel, Beca Group

2006: Rebecca Holbrook, General Counsel, Fisher & Paykel Appliances Ltd

2005: Andrea Haggitt, Legal Counsel, Air New Zealand.

Nominees should be in-house counsel employed as practising lawyers in New Zealand by corporate, government or other organisations and must have worked in an in-house counsel role for less than five years as at 15 May 2008. It should be no more than 10 years since their first date of admission as a barrister and solicitor.

A judging panel of CLANZ patron Sir Ian Barker QC, CLANZ president Helen Mackay and Bell Gully corporate partner Dean Oppenhuis will select the winner with the award being announced and presented at the 2008 CLANZ conference in Rotorua on 15 May.

Based on the high number of quality entries in recent years, the judges encourage nominations for individuals who have previously been entered for the award but were not successful in winning on those occasions.
