Bell Gully gets balder each year

Bell Gully has made a bald statement in support of the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation's Shave for a CureŽ.

For the past three years Bell Gully partners and staff have taken part in the Shave fundraiser losing their locks for the cause, spurred on by a challenge with accountants PricewaterhouseCoopers to see who could raise the most money. This year the two corporates raised a whopping combined total of $104,210, far exceeding last year's efforts.

The official challenge took place on Friday, with nine partners and staff volunteering to lose their locks including two women from Bell Gully's Wellington office - solicitor Sophie Atkinson and legal secretary Jill Kennerley. Other volunteers included partner Tom Bennett and lawyers Tony Dunn, Dean Elliott, Stuart Evans, Tama Potaka, Graeme Switzer and Business Development Director Chris Fogarty.

Bell Gully chairman David Simcock says a healthy spirit of competition between the two firms as to who could raise the most has helped the total increase each year.

"We're particularly proud of Sophie and Jill who raised just over $9000 between them," says David.

"Unfortunately, like many organisations, Bell Gully also has people personally affected by these diseases. Losing your hair isn't as brave as those who have to battle these conditions."

The money raised will assist the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation (LBF) to support thousands of New Zealanders and their families already affected by leukaemia and blood conditions and the six new patients diagnosed each day.

Pru Etcheverry, Executive Director of the LBF is appreciative of the support. "The need in New Zealand is great. The thing about these diseases is that they can strike quickly and with no warning. And treatment can go on for months or even years. We receive no government funding and rely heavily on the efforts of organisations such as Bell Gully and PwC."

This year PwC won the challenge which means the losing side is required to make an unprecedented national public apology - in a national newspaper this week.
