The new look legislation proposed to promote minimising waste and encouraging recycling was a key item on the agenda at a Wellington conference this week.
The Waste Minimisation Legislation Conference attracted central and local government representatives along with environment and waste officers from New Zealand industry and corporates.
Bell Gully senior associate Marija Batistich was among the presenters, giving an outline of the key components of the Waste Minimisation and Resource Recovery Bill and its implications for business and public sector organisations.
The Bill began its life with the Green Party as the Waste Minimisation (Solids) Bill, passing its first reading in June 2006. It went to the Local Government and Environment Select Committee, which received and heard a range of public submissions. A Supplementary Order Paper was introduced to the select committee to address some of the concerns raised by submitters as well as issues with the original wording of the Bill.
The select committee has now recommended a range of changes to the Bill, including renaming as the Waste Minimisation and Resource Recovery Bill to better reflect the dual purposes of reducing waste and recycling resources.
