Governance challenges for Maori incorporations

Enhance the legislative framework to provide better governance incentives for New Zealand's Maori incorporations, suggests Bell Gully solicitor Tama Potaka.

Shareholders' expectations are growing when it comes to the performance and behaviour of management committees yet the current governance framework for Maori incorporations may mean they are failing to meet these expectations. Governance standards for committee members should compare with company directors and there are fundamental concepts that are applicable for incorporations, as well as companies, says Tama.

In his paper Challenges for Maori incorporations, published in the New Zealand Law Journal in September 2007, Tama explores the issue in detail.
