New Zealand's new insider trading laws have been outlined by Bell Gully senior associate Jenny Cooper at the Securities Legislation and Capital Markets Update conference held in Auckland.
Jenny presented a paper on the new laws, passed as part of the first stage of the Government's review and reform of securities law in New Zealand. The paper highlights some of the key changes from the existing legislation, particularly how the new laws change the focus of insider trading rules from the relationship with the issuer to the nature of the information held. She also examines some notable decisions from Australia, which has had 16 years' experience of a similar regime.
The Securities Legislation and Capital Markets Update conference provided an opportunity for legal practitioners, in-house counsel, brokers and financial advisors to explore the changing regulatory environment. The conference, held on 13-14 September, featured key experts on securities and capital markets and included an overview of future regulatory changes; the new market manipulation regime; the powers of the Securities Commission and; Bell Gully senior associate Louise Hill's review of share purchase plans.
