Integrated planning critical for future of Auckland transport

Critical issues for the future of Auckland's transport needs have been outlined at a major New Zealand transport conference.

Transport - The Next 50 Years drew several hundred delegates from around the country to hear speakers focused on policy, planning and delivery of transport services, at the Christchurch Convention Centre, 25-27 July.

Bell Gully resource management specialists were among the speakers and presented a paper focused on Auckland issues, prepared in conjunction with client Auckland Regional Transport Authority.

Titled The integration of land use planning and transport - a case study of the Local Government (Auckland) Amendment Act 2004, the paper was prepared and presented at the conference by Bell Gully senior partner David McGregor, senior associate Marija Batistich, and Maree Faid, Strategic Transport Planning Manager for the Auckland Regional Transport Authority.

The paper looked at the importance of integrating transport with land use planning in the region, and specifically whether the 2004 legislation was enabling this to occur, as intended.

The authors say: "Integrating transport with land use planning in Auckland is key to securing the region's future transport needs but without focusing on the primary purpose of the legislation and keeping an eye on future targets, it may just get a little too hard.

"Clearly there needs to be a commitment from territorial authorities to provide for the integration of transport planning, and a greater focus on the benefits of the relationship with land use planning," they conclude.
