On Monday 18 November 2002, the Minister of Research, Science and Technology and Associate Minister of Industry and Regional Development released a discussion paper Bioprospecting in New Zealand: Discussing the Options.

Bioprospecting involves the study of micro-organisms, plants, animals and other biological resources for features that may be of value for commercial development.

The paper was released because the Government is investigating establishing a policy framework to encourage bioprospecting in New Zealand as it has the potential to create a range of benefits for New Zealand.

The paper covers the opportunities available, problems with the current regulatory framework and the advantages of having a bioprospecting policy. The paper does not address issues associated with the collection and use of human tissues or genetic material.
