Bell Gully partner appointed to Accounting Standards Review Board

Bell Gully partner Garry Downs has been appointed a member of the Accounting Standards Review Board (ASRB).

Garry is one of New Zealand's leading legal advisers on large transactions and specialises in mergers and acquisitions, with a particular emphasis on energy and utilities.

ASRB members are appointed by the Governor General on the recommendation of the Minister of Commerce and serve a five-year term.

Garry Downs has practised commercial and corporate law since 1982 and has been a partner in the firm since 1992.

He specialises in mergers and acquisitions, company and securities law, corporate restructuring and major infrastructure projects.

The Accounting Standards Review Board

The ASRB is a Crown entity established under the Financial Reporting Act 1993. The ASRB's main function is to review and approve financial reporting standards and any amendments to the standards. In carrying out this function the ASRB is charged with:

  • encouraging the development of financial reporting standards, including financial reporting standards for different classes of reporting entities; and

  • liaising with the Accounting Standards Board in Australia with a view to harmonising New Zealand and Australian financial reporting standards.
