Phil is an extremely experienced competition lawyer, who has been involved in the competition law aspects of many leading New Zealand corporate transactions over the past 20 years.

Phil's work has included mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, restrictive trade practices and corporate restructurings. He regularly represents clients before competition bodies such as the Commerce Commission and has forged long-standing relationships as a trusted advisor to major companies such as Air New Zealand.

Chambers Asia Pacific 2013 ranks Phil as a leading lawyer in competition and antitrust and notes he is "very talented and well respected in the field, particularly on the acquisitions side". Previous editions state that "Phil 'has long been a master' of the intricacies of competition law", "he is universally respected for his wealth of experience and his 'ability to stand back and look at the big picture'" and he is "highly recommended for his strong intellect across the domain." The Global Competition Review notes that he "wins almost universal praise from rivals." He is also recognised as a leading competition expert in Who's Who Legal 2011.

Advised Cavalier Wool Holdings in relation to its successful application for authorisation to acquire the wool scouring assets of Wool Services International.

Carter Holt Harvey sale of forestry interests
Advised Rank Group's subsidiary, Carter Holt Harvey, a New Zealand-based forest products company and also New Zealand's largest forest owner, on the competition aspects of the sale of its forestry business comprising substantially all of its forestry interests including approximately 260,000 hectares of freehold and non-freehold forestry estate, to US-based forestry manager Hancock Natural Resource Group Inc. for in excess of NZ$1.5 billion.

Advised Air New Zealand on the proposed codeshare arrangement between Air New Zealand Limited and Qantas Airways Limited.

Pernod Ricard
We successfully assisted Pernod Ricard in an investigation by the Commerce Commission into whether or not it could retain a number of key brands acquired in its acquisition of Allied Domecq plc. The brands had previously been the subject of a divestment undertaking.
