Niels leads the firm's tax practice. He has considerable experience in taxation and financial planning.
His specific expertise includes corporate taxation, financial modelling and the wide field of employee remuneration. Niels' wide-ranging experience includes assisting corporates implement the most appropriate corporate structure whether by way of internal reorganisation or pursuant to a merger or takeover (including by way of amalgamation), and advising corporates on the tax implications of potential financial arrangements, including operating leases and project finance.
He has advised major banks on numerous financial structures and proposals including the development of financial instruments; cross-border leasing; finance structures; securitisation of mortgages and book debts; equity swaps; equity warrants; and sub-participation proposals.
A past convener of the New Zealand Law Society's Taxation Committee and regular presenter of papers on tax issues for the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants, he is also a New Zealand tax reporter for the International Fiscal Association and author of the Employee Remuneration Handbook.
World Tax 2010 lists Niels as a leading tax practitioner. The Tax Directors Handbook 2010 features Niels as one of only four New Zealand tax lawyers in its list of the world's top 250 tax lawyers, as recommended by clients – for the second year running. Niels is also listed as a leading individual in tax in Asia Pacific Legal 500 2009/2010, Asialaw Leading Lawyers 2010, Who's Who Legal 2010 and PLC Which Lawyer? 2009, which describes him as "one of New Zealand's leading corporate tax lawyers".
Chambers Global 2010 ranks Niels as a leading tax lawyer, describing him as "one of the leading practitioners in tax law".
