Mathew advises New Zealand and offshore clients on all aspects of New Zealand tax law.

Mathew has been a member of the Bell Gully tax team since 2001. He advises on all aspects of New Zealand corporate tax law, including tax issues affecting mergers and acquisitions, capital restructuring and financing arrangements, cross border transactions, debt securitisations and employee share and option plans. He also provides advice to clients on the establishment and operation of managed fund vehicles (including PIEs and limited partnerships).

Mathew regularly assists clients in disputes with the New Zealand Inland Revenue Department during the audit and dispute resolution phases and in court proceedings in the High Court and Court of Appeal.

Chambers Asia Pacific 2013 names Mathew as a leading tax lawyer who "is lauded by clients as having 'demonstrated an excellent ability to understand complex business concepts.'" Previous editions state he has "earned enthusiastic praise from clients" and quotes sources describing him as "a personable guy who is accessible, with lots of energy. He follows up everything in written documents that are well set out and written in plain English." He is also recognised as a leading tax practitioner in World Tax 2012.
