Murray leads the firm's national insolvency practice. His litigation and broader commercial expertise has been applied to the most significant insolvency matters in New Zealand in recent years.

Murray regularly acts for banks, receivers, liquidators and statutory managers. He regularly presents arguments in the High Court and Court of Appeal and successfully argued the first case under the Personal Property Securities Act.

Murray is a member of the Joint Insolvency Committee comprising representatives from the New Zealand Law Society and the Society of Chartered Accountants. The committee advises the Ministry of Economic Development and Government select committees on insolvency-related issues arising from proposed law changes.

Earlier in his career, Murray spent three years with Clifford Chance in London, where he specialised in banking and insolvency litigation.

IFLR1000 2008 lists Murray as one of the world's leading lawyers for insolvency and restructuring, while Chambers Global 2008 ranks him as a top insolvency lawyer and an "an excellent operator", who "garners a great deal of respect from peers and clients for his work on complex and high-end cases." Asia Pacific Legal 500 2007/2008 names Murray as a leading individual in insolvency restructuring while Asialaw Leading Lawyers 2007 recognises him as a leading restructuring, insolvency and bankruptcy lawyer. Murray is also highly recommended in PLC Which Lawyer 2008.
