Brian is the senior partner in the firm's litigation practice. He specialises in providing both court advocacy and litigation advice in the areas of commercial and corporate law, contract law, administrative law, banking, insurance, defamation and intellectual property.
Brian has been a specialist litigation partner since 1975. He has conducted cases in all areas of civil and commercial litigation and has extensive experience acting both for plaintiffs and defendants. As well as acting for major New Zealand corporate clients, banks, professional firms and insurers, Brian has acted on significant matters for English, Australian, Japanese, American and Italian clients.
As a barrister, Brian has appeared as counsel in many leading cases before the High Court, Court of Appeal and Privy Council, more than 50 of which are reported in the Law Reports. Brian has also appeared as counsel in significant hearings before many specialist courts and tribunals, including the Maori Land Court, the Securities Commission, the Commerce Commission, the Surveillance Panel of the New Zealand Stock Exchange, Commissions of Inquiry (including the Winebox commission), Parliamentary Select Committees, the Broadcasting Tribunal, the Marketing Surveillance Committee of the NZEM and the Appeal Board of NZEM.
Brian is listed as a leading individual in litigation in Chambers Global 2008, which describes him as belonging "in the top echelons of both the firm and the sector". Asia Pacific Legal 500 2007/2008 features Brian as a leading individual and he is recognised in PLC Which Lawyer 2008 as one of the top three "leading individuals" in dispute resolution in New Zealand firms.
