Our Capabilities

Bell Gully acts for a wide range of government clients, including more than 10 government departments, 20 Crown entities, and at least 10 other statutory bodies.

Our work includes advising the Government on its commercial activities and providing advice on a range of public law issues, such as:

  • the Official Information Act
  • the Ombudsmen Act
  • the Public Finance Act
  • the Crown Entities Act
  • legislative process and drafting
  • judicial review
  • consultation and decision making processes
  • the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act
  • Treaty of Waitangi settlements
  • the Human Rights Act.

An area of public law practice particular to New Zealand is in issues related to the Treaty of Waitangi and Maori entities. Bell Gully has the leading specialist Maori law practice in the country and has advised iwi clients for over 20 years.

We also advise business on its interaction with the Government. We are experienced in lobbying politicians and officials, making submissions to select committees, handling Official Information Act enquiries, and negotiating agreements between business clients and the Crown.

We have retained the services of Paul East QC to assist our clients with their lobbying activities.
